A Life Unseen

Revised and Expanded Edition

by Denise Park Parsons

“Emma didn’t look like a pioneer, but that’s exactly what she was…She broke down unquestioned barriers that had acquired strength and an untenable resistance to change through the quiet passing of many years. It was a physically painful process for her and an emotionally painful process for me. Did she open hearts and minds as she passed through those barriers? I’d like to think so.”

Denise Park Parsons

“To this day my core memory of that (first) conference was seeing girls who looked like my sister. I finally felt like we belonged somewhere.”

Caleigh Van Lier

“I accepted that seizures would happen, but they wouldn’t sidetrack our day…I stopped apologizing to others for how we lived.”

Gabrielle Estrella

“There is always a short distance between joy and sorrow, love and anger. I hope our story brings hope and love.” —Anci Haugerud

“We have learned to be gently and respectfully steadfast about what is best for our Penny.” —Cecilia & Michael Hernandez

“(My sister) taught me that everyone, even someone who cannot speak, has something valuable to say and is worth listening to.” —Joe Costa
