Troop Ship Engagement

 by Earl Blackney

THE YEAR IS 1917. THE WINDS OF WAR ARE BUFFETING the rockbound shores of Winter Harbor and the queen city of Bangor, Maine. Wireless radio enthusiast Bert Gold and nursing student Jane Hollowell will soon realize their dreams in the whirlwind of World War I.

A chance meeting on a Maine Central Railroad train sets the stage for this coming-of-age story. They share their adventures at sea and the shocking reality of wartime service in written letters from the European battle fields and passage on the north Atlantic Ocean.

Can the letters they share sustain the friendship pledged by both Mainers to meet again in peacetime and share a dinner and a ginger ale after each suffering real wartime experiences?

Troop Ship Engagement is based on historical facts that were common experiences of most sons and daughters of Maine while in the service of their country and humanity.
